Staging 101: Great DIY Home Improvement Projects You Can Complete in a Weekend

Often when a homeowner decides it’s time to move on, and they begin taking stock of what really needs doing in order to get their home ready for sale there is nothing big that needs doing, but a lot of little things instead. However, if they are honest, no homeowner really wants to put a great deal of time or money into a house they intend to part with soon anyway.

Basic home improvements, repairs and staging are a must when preparing any home for sale though and there are some things you can do that are both inexpensive, relatively easy for the DIY fan to accomplish and time efficient enough that they can be completed in a weekend, at most. Here are just a few tips and ideas.

Update Your Cupboards’ Hardware – A little ashamed of the way your kitchen and or bathroom cupboards look these days? They may not need to be replaced (an expensive business) or even refaced to make them more attractive. Often the simple act of replacing generic, or dated factory issue cupboard hardware with something more stylish can give your cupboards a whole new look in the space of just a few hours.

Replace a Sink – A boring bathroom can be completely transformed just by the act of swapping out the sink. Don’t forget to consider function as well as form though and silly as it may sound act out your morning routine before you buy a new sink, even if the assistants in the store think you are a bit weird. Home buyers are looking for function as well as fine form and it’s not much use investing in a fancier sink if it’s actually so fancy it’s hard to use. And, by the way, if you are unsure of your own plumbing skills call in an expert to help with that part, as dealing with accidental water damage is the last thing you need!

Replace an Interior Door – We go through them all the time, but interior doors are one of the most overlooked features in most homes. Replacing a plain one (or several of them) for something a bit newer and more eye-catching is easy to do, relatively inexpensive and will have a bigger impact on the look and appeal of your home in general than you might imagine.

Paint – or Paper – a Room in a Weekend – It sounds so simple but there are very few homeowners who have never seen the huge impact a fresh coat of paint or a nice bit of new wallpaper can have on a room. In fact, you can totally transform almost any room in this way and still have plenty of time left over to relax on a Sunday afternoon before you have to head back to work.
